Flying fish journey – lyo

Natural spring in the mountains – Breathtaking views of Dongao Bay

The only Atayal village that is surrounded by mountains and the sea

Located near the TRA Dongao Station in Nanao Township, Yilan, Iyo is an indigenous village reachable with convenient transportation. Geographically, Iyo is surrounded by mountains on three sides and the ocean on one side, and there are natural springs on the mountain. Dongao Bay boasts pleasant scenery; in summer, visitors can experience canoeing to catch an up-close glimpse of the gorgeous Dongao Bay. In addition, due to the Kuroshio Current, the flying fish season takes place from April to June every year. There is a seasonal tour called Palm Flying Fish Tour, where visitors can experience finning, gutting, salting, hooking, and hanging flying fish on a handmade iron barrel, where they are roasted over a wood fire until dried. It is an impressive experience, and the dried flying fish complements rice perfectly to create a mouthwatering dish. The tribal guide will also explain the culture and stories of the village: Drawings featuring the characteristics of Iyo in front of Dong Ao Elementary School depict the unique story of the mountain and ocean culture; the winding Snake Mountain Trail; tribal sightseeing houses, observation towers, warrior statues, etc. At the end of the trip, participants will enjoy a DIY experience, allowing everyone to make timeless small flying fish ornaments and take them home as souvenirs.
